Natural Sun Care Tips

When it comes to the sun, most are scared to be in the sun for more then 20 minutes at a time without sunscreen, let alone a few hours.  For safe summer fun, you want to protect your skin but you also need a good amount of safe sun exposure so your body can make the required amount of Vitamin D to keep you healthy and ward off diseases like cancer.

With more then one million new cases of skin cancer diagnosed in the U.S. every year, most are scared to stay in the sun for more then a few minutes without lathering on sunscreen full of chemicals and don't realize the sun is actually good for you and prevents all types of cancers.  You can learn more by reading The Natural News free report called The Truth About Sunlight and Vitamin D.

Most people don't know that sunscreens sold at most retail stores actually have cancer causing chemicals in them like fragrances, parabens, harsh alcohols, toxic chemical solvents and petroleum oils.  That's why research shows that using sunscreen actually causes more cancer than it prevents.  With so many scared to go in the sun, 75% of the us are not getting enough Vitamin D, the essential sunshine Vitamin.  It's essential that you get your daily vitamin D to stay healthy.

Natural Sun Care Tips

1.) Aim for 10-20 minutes in the sun per day.  Humans were created to be in and out of the sun all day.  However, most of us are inside all day and don't get our required levels of Vitamin D.  Safe levels of sun exposure help prevent all different types of cancer, improve your mood and give you that healthy looking bronze glow.  Tip: If your very fair, try 10-15 minutes per day until your skin builds up an immunity to the sun.  Once you're skin has built the immunity, you can stay out for longer periods of time without sunscreen as long as you take breaks in the shade and wear protective clothing.

2.) Load up on Antioxidants.  You can boost your internal sunscreen by eating antioxidant-rich foods and superfoods.  The more natural antioxidants you have in your diet, the more sunlight your skin will be able to handle without burning.  Load up on whole fresh vegetables and fruits such as: Goji berries (not the juice), Raspberries, Blackberries, Blueberries, Vitamins A and C are also vital as your cells use these vitamins to regulate both light absorption and protection against overexposure.

3.) Seek the shade when you start to feel too hot.  This is a sign it's time to get of the sun and get into the shade for a while.  Practice the shadow rule and teach it to children. If your shadow is shorter than you, the sun’s rays are at their strongest.

4.) Wear Protective Clothing including a hat and sunglasses.  Once you've received your optimal Vitamin D, cover your head with a wide-brimmed hat, shading your face, ears and neck with sunscreen.  Wear sunglasses with UV absorption to provide optimal protection for the eyes.

5.) Avoid chemical laden sunscreens and natural, non-toxic sunscreens instead.  Natural sunscreen and brands to look for and my favorites for the whole family are: Earth's BestLavera True NaturalJosie Maran Cosmetics, Loving Naturals, Jason and Kiss My Face.  Some of these brands also offer after sun care, sunburn care, self tanners, cosmetics, skin and hair care products.

In summary, stick with truly natural sunscreen products (when needed) and try to build up a natural, healthy tan while consuming large quantities of super foods and antioxidants in your diet.  Daily juicing of fresh fruits and vegetables which are loaded with antioxidants and living nutrients. Time your sun exposure to build up a healthy tan so that you don't need sunscreen at all.  Contrary to all the misinformation about the sun, a healthy tan is actually a good sign that you're achieving adequate vitamin D synthesis in your own skin.

You can search your personal care products in their database, Skin Deep for safe sunscreens, skincare and cosmetics.

  1. Vitamin d is essential to our body specially our skin, and one of the best natural source is sunlight - but make sure not to overexpose because it has bad effects as well. If you want to have a great skin, aside from vitamin d is antioxidant. We can get it from foods and supplements like astaxanthin and also in some beauty products but make sure it is organic and has antioxidant content.

  2. I always use all natural sunscreen when I go outdoors. I don't like the idea of putting anything on my skin to absorb that I wouldn't ingest. A lot of my friends think I'm crazy, but I absolutely swear by it! I rarely get sun burn, and no longer have break outs!
