If you have cancer in your family like I do, you want to do everything you can to help prevent cancer and live a long, healthy life. With the cancer epidemic so widespread these days, it's good to try to live as healthy as possible. In the last 30 years the global cancer burden has doubled, and is estimated to nearly triple by 2030! I don't know about you but that inspires me to take charge and do something about it! A healthy lifestyle is the best way to avoid becoming a cancer statistic so here are some ways to help avoid cancer.
Normalizing your insulin levels is one of the best ways to lower your risk of cancer and cutting sugars and grains out of your diet is a must! Even eating simple breads, pastas and rice - increase insulin levels which triggers the body to raise the bloodsugar and gain weight. Cutting down on sugar and carbs is key in both cancer prevention and weight loss. If you have cancer, you'll want to reduce your intake to below 10 grams per day from all sources.
Increase Your Vitamin D Levels
There's overwhelming evidence that vitamin D deficiency plays a crucial role in cancer development. Researchers within this field have estimated that about 30 percent of cancer deaths might be prevented each year simply by optimizing the Vitamin D levels in the general population. You can decrease your risk of cancer by more then half, simply getting optimal sun exposure year-round.
If your fair and scared to go out in the sun for fear of burning, just try 15 minutes a day and work your way up to 20 and then 30 min. a day. If you eat a healthy, organic diet full of fresh fruits, vegetables and lean protein, your skin will build up a layer underneath the skin which acts as a natural sunscreen which will help to prevent sunburn. If you stay out longer then 30 min. at a time, be sure to wear a hat and protective clothing. You can also use a safe tanning bed, or a good Vitamin D3 supplement. But the best way to raise your Vitamin D levels is from sun exposure.
Exercise regularly. There's compelling evidence indicating that exercise can slash your risk of cancer by reducing elevated insulin levels and normalizing estrogen. For example, women who exercise regularly can reduce their breast cancer risk by 20-30 percent compared to those who are inactive.
Eat animal-based Omega-3 fats. Try to eat portion sized protein from lean sources such as chicken, turkey and fish every day. Try to only eat red meat once a week if possible or less as it's not as lean as chicken, turkey and fish.
Eat lots of Veges. Eat as many fresh, organic vegetables as you can. Cruciferous vegetables in have been anti-cancer properties.
Destress. Remember, what we think about, is what we become! The CDC states that 85 percent of disease is caused by emotions. That means we need to have way less stress and negativity in our lives and more happiness and positivity. Try to de-stress through meditation, exercise or by doing something you enjoy to reduce stress. Simply taking a walk out in the sun can do wonders for your mood!
Maintain an ideal body weight
Get enough sleep
Reduce exposure to environmental toxins. These include pesticides, household chemical cleaners, synthetic air fresheners, air pollution, and plastic toxins like BPA. When buying household cleaners look for chemical free, all natural plant derived options like Dr. Bronner's Castile Soap which is made with natural, organic essential oils and literally dissolves dirt! It's one of the best natural cleaner around with an amazing 18-1 uses.
It cleans everything from the dishes to the floors, even your laundry and you can also use it to wash your hair and body too! We always have Dr. Bronner's Castile Soap in our home and I wouldn't be without it! It really gets the job done and I even use it on my toddler at bath time. Love your site (currently loving natural beauty/food blogs) but I do have to disagree with some of your tips here. If you're interested in finding out more about health & nutrition you should pick up "The China Study" - a book full of valuable information about your health and food consumption! I agree staying healthy and cutting out sugars is a good idea, but cutting out carbs and eating animal protein is not! Many studies have shown (as you can read in this book and many other studies) that animal protein is one of the worst things you can put it your body and absolutely *increases* your chances of getting cancer - not the other way around :( Also good carbs prevent cancer as well. If you are really serious about preventing cancer you should eat as natural as possible, and watch your animal protein intake, if you can cut all of of out. While older studies may be in favor of animal protein newer studies show quite the opposite - cancer cells love animal protein and grow faster with it, and also stop growing when one stops consuming animal protein. I hope you look into this, you don't have to agree with me or this book but do your research before encouraging people to eat meat and cut our carbs which is *not* the way to avoid cancer but will actually increase your chances!
