Start out by making small changes like removing chemicals from your diet and your skin care regimen. Every little bit counts and not only benefits you and those around you, but our beautiful planet too!
Eat green food
Organic food, or food that has not been sprayed with pesticides, will keep your insides clean. Fruits and vegetables contain anti-oxidants that fight the free radical cells that cause cancer. Most experts agree that eating five to fifteen servings of vegetables is needed to give the body enough anti-oxidant fuel. Or eat foods known to be high in anti-oxidants, such as green tea, acai berries, blueberries, chocolate, and broccoli.
Green your make-up and skincare
Look for natural, organic and ecocert skincare and make-up like Physicians Formula or Josie Maran Cosmetics. Avoid products derived from petroleum, such as mineral oil, and petroleum jelly as well as sodium laurel sulfates, parabens and perfumes and dyes. Take a few moments to read the back of labels. If it's full of chemicals you cannot pronounce, don't put them on your skin or in your hair. Remember, everything you put on your skin is absorbed into the bloodstream and if it's not a natural substance, it will be stored in the fatty tissue because your body doesn't recognize it.
Green your commute
Ride or walk on your next errand. You'll save the planet from toxic fossil fuels and add cardio, fat burning to your day. Bring a bag for your groceries. You'll save a tree and build some nice biceps on the way home.
Green your homeOur homes are filled with electricity that wears down the body, kills cells and exhausts the immune systems. At least when sleeping, reduce the emissions from electricity in your environment. Turn off all lights that are not in use, and unplug appliances that are not running, like the toaster, hair dryer, electric can opener, television. This saves energy and improves your sleep.
Also turn off your computer and especially your wireless modem. Do not keep your cell phone near your body as you sleep. Move the charger far from your bedroom, and especially far from your head. These electrical impulses are hard to measure, but scientists are now concluding that prolonged exposure can be damaging to your health.
Use non-toxic cleaners. Scrub the wood floor with water and vinegar. The residuals of chemicals used to clean your home end up on your plate and in your body. To clean the air, burn a candle. This will clean smells from the air without adding toxins from artificial scents. Use a candle that burns clean, like beeswax or soy.
Reduce pollution in your home, in your city and in your body. The planet you save may be your own. So celebrate earthday everyday and start going green today!

Allison, the founder of Clarisea suffered from acne since high school but after countless visits to the dermatologist and endless spending on topical treatments, she was completely frustrated and wasn't sure what to do. Then she found hope. The summer after college she was staying at the beach for a month and the ocean water was unusually warm so she was swimming a couple times every day. For Brilliant hair
- To mend split ends rub olive oil into the ends of hair. Leave in for 30 minutes and then shampoo as usual. The oil nourishes hair and adds moisture.
- To add brightness and a shiny gloss to hair, Julia March, owner and specialist at Julia March Skincare, recommends combining 2-3 tablespoons of raw apple cider vinegar with a cup of water. Use this mixture after shampooing, and be sure to rinse to avoid a lingering vinegar aroma!
- Done with that beer? Put it aside for the shower. After shampooing, rinse wet hair with a tepid beer for added volume and shine.
For a radiant face
- Problem skin? March suggests letting the face absorb the vapors from a steaming pot of 3 tablespoons of raw unfiltered apple cider vinegar combined with a quart of filtered water. Raw apple cider vinegar can also be used as a tonic for oily skin when mixed with distilled water at a 1:1 ratio (not steamed).
- To combat puffy eyes, apply used black teabags to the swollen area.
- If slightly sunburned, apply cucumber slices to the face. Dry skin will draw moisture from the slices, in addition to being nourished by the many vitamins in cucumbers.
- For hydration and a radiant glow, March recommends applying a facial mask of raw honey and plain, full fat yogurt for 15- 20 minutes. The fats in the dairy and honey will moisturize and nourish the skin.
For smooth skin
- To exfoliate the body effectively and inexpensively, create a DIY body scrub with olive oil and sea salt. Pay special attention to rough areas like elbows, knees and feet. March notes that a few drops of lavender extract add a nice and soothing scent to this homemade concoction.
- All out of bath foam and in need of a luxurious bath? Adding a quart of full cream milk to bath water will help restore and calm skin’s lipids while milk proteins help maintain skin’s elasticity.
- For hard and white nails, spoil fingers with a lemon bath. Dip nails into one half of a lemon and turn them, squeezing out the juice. Let them soak for a minute.
For whiter teeth
- As a cheap alternative to whitening teeth, mix a teaspoon of baking soda and a pinch of salt with a small glass of water until mixture is paste-like. Brush teeth as usual and rinse well. It is proven that baking soda will help lighten stains, but be careful not to use too often. Once every two weeks should be enough, as baking soda can be abrasive and erode tooth enamel.
